When I stop and really think about it seems like yesterday when my wife and I started in business and it has been over 32 years ago that we actually did, believe me when I say that there has been many times over the years that I did not no if we would make it to the next yet over 32 years we still are in business. Statistically over 90 percent of people who start in business fail and yet we are still here so I must have done something right so that is why I am going to take some time and outline what you or any other small business person can do to also be successful.
Running a Business
Successful business people do not just happen to be or is it something that can be taught, schools can teach you the basics but they cannot make you succeed only you can do that with drive and motivation and the ability to learn from mistakes, hopefully you do not make to big of mistakes. People today just as years ago feel the only way to succeed is to have everything new, well that is not always the case and I am proof of that as my main business has been a work in progress for over 30 years during which time I raised a family and at times they were involved in the business. Today business is changing as now we have the internet and today’s businesses need to harness the power of the internet and today those who do not harness the power are losing out on a very strong way to build their business, to be quite honest there are not to many businesses today that would not benefit from the internet.
I am not going to try to sell you a bill of goods because over the years I have learned that I do not like anyone that tries to sell me anything and if they do try I almost always never buy. I definitely hate the hardsell type or people who have nothing to back-up what they are saying, of course this again probably comes from experience so maybe you can benefit from my experience.
Have you noticed in your area of the country or the world that you are seeing many established businesses close their doors, every wander why? In most cases businesses go out because they cannot except change, by change I mean adapt the business to today’s market. Many old businesses have the thought they have been doing things the same since the beginning and doing fine so why change, if you think like that than you had better change or you might be one of the statistics.
How can you succeed in today’s economy?
There are no guarantees today for one reason, application. Pretty simple isn’t it, well the reason I say this is everyone is different and everyone takes information differently and interprets information in a different way. To be quite honest it is amazing but I have seen it a million times over the years and that is the main reason I do not or will not provide any guarantee, just advice and you can do with it what you want and apply it anyway you want.
So you have either bought a business or are starting a business what is the first thing you should do today?
If it were me I would put up a website, this can be the single most important part of your business today though if you do it wrong then you just wasted your money. Many website designers and developers will create you a presence with no thought on how it will rank on the major serps so make sure that you are hiring someone who understands search engines or it really do not matter how much you are spending.
Ok, now you have a website and a business but still see no business from the website?
If you do not rank locally or regionally for what you do with your new website within 60 to 90 days then the website more than likely was done wrong, in most cases for these rankings you do not need much in the way of incoming links.
Ok, I am ranked locally and regionally but how can I build my business outside of the area?
To do this there are a couple things that you must do:
- Build incoming link to your website from similar type websites or directories or get them to link to you. How? The first way would be to ask or the second way would be make sure that your website offers quality content either via a blog or
- Have you added your business to places on Google, Yahoo and MSN or Bing, if you do not know then you need to get someone who does.
- Create a facebook business page and add it to your website, social networking for businesses is here to stay.

Ok now you have done the above, you will need to do this ongoing as your online business is like your brick and mortar business, it takes constant work on building your business and you need to keep up with the changing of technology or you might end up out of the loop like the businesses that are dropping like flies today.
